So, if you’ve followed this blog for a while you’ve probably noticed that over the past couple of months I’ve been blogging more often and much more consistently than I have in the past couple of years. There’s a reason for that. In late September/early October I found myself at a crossroads when it came to my blog – I was either going to quit blogging or I was going to serious about this thing. I felt like I never had anything to blog about or if had a few ideas, they’d sit in my drafts never to be published and that’s if they even made it to drafts.
I always wondered how people who scheduled posts ahead of time did it, in my best days I’d schedule a post for the next morning, and that was that. I’ve always been a spur of the moment blogger but that led to me blogging once a week, if that. So I gave blog planning and using an editorial calendar a try. And so far, it’s been awesome for me so I thought I’d share a little bit about it since it seems a lot of bloggers I follow talked about wanting to blog more consistently in their 2014 resolution ;)
Blog Planning with an Editorial Calendar
The first thing I did was create a simple month view type calendar where I write – in pencil – what I’ll blog about throughout the mont. The in pencil part seems important to mention. I don’t ever want blogging to feel like a chore, like something I have to do because of an arbitrary calendar I made up. So I write everything in pencil, that way, if I change my mind I can always move things around. I change my mind easily or sometimes the “spur of the moment” blogger comes back out and decides, “nope, not blogging about this tomorrow. Instead I’m blogging about my dogs, because they’re awesome”.
I also like to leave days blank, I keep things interesting that way and let the spur of the moment blogger come back up. I also included 3 boxes at the top of my editorial calendar where I take notes, jot down future post ideas, link ups I like to join, and make note of any blog maintenance I need to do.

Yes, absolutely. I look at my blog planner and I see all the posts I want to write and I’m excited about blogging again. Now, I’m always thinking ahead so I remember to take pictures, buy things I might need ahead of time, etc. AND my page views are way up. I’ve always said that I like to blog for myself but it’s nice to see those page views go up. Way up. As in, I’ve tripled the page views I was getting before. I’m not attributing this only to blog planning – there’s a few things at play here – but it has certainly helped.
This week I decided to create a “Year at a Glance” so I can plan out some seasonal posts ahead of time (Christmas crafts anyone?! Too soon?) I also included a grey box at the bottom of each month, I’ll be using this box to write down posts I’ve already published that I’ll re-pin or promote that month so they don’t just sit in my archives doing nothing.
